Surviving Homicide
Evelyn was fumbling for her keys in the Emergency Room parking lot after her shift when she was robbed and stabbed to death.
Waldo lost $15 playing Poker at Jerry’s home last night. Not bad, but not the worst of the evening either. He lost his friend Stewart also; actually he killed Stewart driving home while under the influence.
Mel was killed in a gang related drive-by shooting incident. It was an unfortunate coincidence that during his birthday party his older brother’s rival gang showed up. He was nine.
Jane is Evelyn’s friend. She is crushed at the news. She tries to console Jane’s family, but only escalates tension by outbursts of her own rage.
Waldo likewise devastated about Stewart’s death, avoids Stewart’s family out of shame.
Mel’s family is overcome with immediate grief. Mother blames the police for failure to prevent gang violence. Older brother plans revenge.
Survivors of homicide face difficulties beyond the immediate crisis; dramatic and long lasting life changes may be expected.
Support is often needed and sometimes welcomed. Support however may not by itself be enough. REBT is particularly suited to eliminating emotional disturbance so that one may be able to think straight during recovery. Further REBT may be instrumental in maintaining rational planning and management during difficult circumstances.
