Problem Supervisor

Kaye has a difficult supervisor. She dreads going to work in the morning fearing another confrontation. She feels she can't do anything well in his eyes. She doesn't like the way he disregards her and disparages her to other employees. Kaye doesn't know whether she has the support of co-workers, as they don't seem to be offended by him.

Kaye is unsure if she has grounds for an Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) complaint and she does not know if the HR staff would be supportive. She spends her time worrying; her performance has dropped markedly, which she thinks her supervisor holds against her.

Kaye has over 8 years with the company, so she doesn't want to risk leaving, but she is afraid she may ultimately be terminated.

Kaye is consumed with the following persistent thoughts:

  • "My supervisor is a bear."
  • Unstated hidden meaning: "He is rotten."
  • "This is a terrible situation."
  • Unstated hidden meaning: "This is so bad I can't stand it and it will never end."
  • "It's not fair that he treats me like this."
  • Unstated hidden meaning: "Life should work out better than this for me."
  • "He must change his approach to me."
  • Unstated hidden meaning: "I must have my way, and be treated wonderfully by everyone, especially my supervisor, at all times."

How do think Kaye feels about her supervisor and her employment? I'll bet she is so miserable that she can't figure out what to do. I'll even bet that whatever she attempts, she sabotages, because she is so disturbed that she can't think straight. So it doesn't matter where the problem lies, or who is at fault, Kaye is in serious trouble and her thinking makes her trouble worse for her.

Kaye would do well to correct her irrational thinking so that she can think straight to take effective action about her supervisor's behavior. After all she can do something about her nutty thinking, which is at least as much against her as her supervisor is.
